英国の教会音楽作曲家グレアム・キーチによる合唱作品集。新型コロナ・ウイルスによる世界的パンデミックとロックダウンにより、あらゆる表現活動が危機にさらされましたが、中でも合唱の活動は制限されることになりました。そんな中信頼できる歌手にそれぞれのパートを個別に録音してもらい、後にミックスするという手法で作られたのがこちらのアルバム。ある曲はオルガン伴奏、ある曲はア・カペラで歌われています。危機の時代が産み落とした、たいへん美しい一枚です。

In the summer of 1999 the Zamir Chorale of Boston celebrated its thirtieth anniversary as well as the centenary of the Zamir movement with a concert tour of Eastern Europe. Performances were given in synagogues and churches， concert halls and museums， restaurants and courtyards， cemeteries and concentration camps. In Warsaw， Todz， Auschwitz， Krakow， Prague， Terezin and Vienna we gave honor to the dead and hope to the living.

This live concert recording is a witness to the excitement and spiritual intensity of our odyssey.

""During the Middle Ages， under the influence of the Kabbalah， Jewish bards began to compose zemirot， sacred songs for the Sabbath table. The lyrics were written down， but the tunes were not. So， while the poetry of these songs has survived， more or less intact， over the centuries， the music has changed as Jews in each land and in each generation have given new voice to the time-honored words. This album presents a sampling of zemirot from various traditions and in various styles. Some of these zemirot are presented as they were originally conceived， simple folksongs intended for families to sing as they sat around the Sabbath table. In other case we have presented the traditional melodies in artistic choral arrangements. Some selections are newly composed works， reflecting contemporary responses to the ancient texts. イタリア北部の都市フェラーラは13世紀に入るとエステ家が支配するようになっていました。エステ家は代々、芸術・文化を手厚く保護し、数多くの芸術家たちがここに傑作を残しています。フェラーラが公国となった15世紀後期からは、華やかなルネサンス文化が花開くこととなりました。フェラーラ公エルコレ1 世はヨーロッパ中から優れた音楽家を集めていて、ジョスカン・デ・プレもその一人でした。そして16世紀になるとフェラーラはイタリア一華やかな文化都市となり、フェラーラ公で一番の芸術好きのアルフォンソ2世はかつてないほどの規模で音楽家を呼び芸術に享楽していました。その中で彼は3人のソプラノによるアンサンブル「コンチェルト・デッレ・ドンネ・ディ・フェラーラ」を結成。彼女たちはアルフォンソ2世お気に入りの秘密の女声アンサンブルとなり、宮廷内で極秘に演奏を行っていました。その時にルッツァスキ、アゴスティーニなどが彼女たちを指導し作品を提供しています。このアルバムはそうした当時の華やかさと、彼女たちの秘密のコンサートを味わうことのできる1 枚。
