フィンランド最古の大学混声合唱団、HOL 合唱団が歌う「フィンランド自然体験の研究」。フィンランドの詩人ふたり、イルマリ・ピミア(1897-1989)とフィンランド・モダニズムの先駆的作品を書いたアーロ・ヘッラーコスキ(1893-1952)、そしてメキシコの詩人オクタビオ・パス(1914-1998)「雨音に耳を傾けるように」 と山口県生まれの俳人、種田山頭火( たねだ・さんとうか)(1882-1940) の作品をテクストとする合唱曲集です。フィンランドのヤルモ・パルヴィアイネンとユホ・ミエッティネンの作品ととも、フィンランド在住の外国人作曲家ふたりの作品が含まれました。マシュー・ホィットールはカナダ生まれ。カナダとアメリカで作曲を学んだ後、2001 年からシベリウス・アカデミーでハメーンニエミとヴェリ＝マッティ・プーマラに師事しました。2004 年トロント交響楽団主催の作曲コンペティションで第1 位を獲得しています。アメリカ出身のアレックス・フリーマンは、シベリウス研究のために留学したヘルシンキでハメーンニエミに作曲を学びました。ホイットールの「雪」を彼がピアノのためにトランスクライブした曲が "" ピアノ・トランスクリプションの芸術"" (ABCD240) に録音されています。

プレトリウス：聖ミヒャエルの日のための晩課

"" 聖ミヒャエルの日のための晩課"" は、「テレプシコーレ舞曲集」や「シオンの音楽」など当時の作曲家の中でも突出した数の作品を生み、17世紀初頭のドイツ・プロテスタントにおいて重要な役割を担ったミヒャエル・プレトリウス（1571/72-1621）の宗教作品集。膨大な数のプレトリウスの作品から"" 聖ミヒャエルの日のための晩課"" を組み立てたドイツ宗教音楽界期待の指揮者イェルク・ブライディングは、1972年ハノーファー出身。共演のヒレ・パール＆シリウス・ヴァイオルズの活躍も楽しみ。

　テレマン：マタイ受難曲（1746）

ハンブルク時代（1721年-1767年）のテレマンは毎年新しい"" 受難曲"" を作曲するよう要請されており、46年間で作曲された受難曲の数はなんと46曲（！）。ここでは現存する受難曲の中から、ハンブルク時代中期に作曲された1746 版の「マタイ受難曲」が演奏されている。

　シュッツ：ヨハネ受難曲SWV.481 ／受難のモテットより 聖歌集

1665年から66年にかけて作曲されシュッツの最高傑作とも評される「3つの受難曲」。3曲の中で最後の番号（SWV.481）が付けられている「ヨハネ受難曲」では、ア・カペラの合唱、フリギア旋法の使用など、シュッツ独特の手法が随所に発揮されている。

２台のピアノとティンパニ伴奏による「ドイツ・レクイエム」に続くR.フーバー＆WDRケルン放送合唱団のブラームス合唱曲第2弾。 《愛の歌》、《新・愛の歌》はもともとSop、Alt、Ten、Basの4人の独唱者と4手のピアノのための作品であるが、このCDではそれぞれのパートを増やし、混声合唱版として演奏している。もっとも混声合唱版による演奏は珍しいことではなく、RIAS室内合唱団やリリングなどのCDが既に出ている。1839年パリ製の歴史的なフォルテピアノを使用、その古びた音色とフーバー指揮WDRケルン合唱団の時代考証に基づいた歌唱が初演当時の雰囲気を伝える。
